In the Nov/Dec Issue: What's Next for Obama, After the Crash, and More

Dear Reader,

No world leader in living memory has inherited a set of circumstances like President-elect Barack Obama. Things seemed complicated even a year ago, when Obama first described how he would cope with the foreign policy challenges he would inherit if elected president in "Renewing American Leadership." Now, the deck is stacked with the worst financial crisis to emerge since the Great Depression.

The November/December 2008 issue of Foreign Affairs addresses some of the key trouble regions for the United States and proposes practical foreign policy strategies for the President-elect and his team of advisers. To read this issue and get a full year of Foreign Affairs delivered to your home or office subscribe today for the special low rate of only $24.95.
In "After the Crash," financial expert James Grant looks beyond the causes of the current economic meltdown and suggests solutions that will help bring relief to the economy and the millions suffering from its collapse. Subscribe now, and youll get an online sneak preview when we release our next issues special package on the far-reaching implications of the financial crisis.

The reaction to Obamas election by Russian leaders President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has been a reminder of the tenuous relations between the two nations. Only a few months ago, deep-rooted tensions between Russia and Georgia erupted into full-scale war. In "The Five Day War," Charles King argues that the war has rekindled a superpower rivalry as it becomes clearer that Russia has again lost faith in multilateral institutions. Redefining the right balance between cooperating and pushing back is the key to U.S. Russia policy, argues Stephen Sestanovich, in "What Has Moscow Done?"

How should President-elect Obama approach the perennial hot spots of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan? In "The Latter-Day Sultan," Iranian journalist and dissident Akbar Ganji cautions that there is too much attention on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and not enough on Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei whose influence is likely to outlast Ahmadinejad's. And in "From Great Game to Grand Bargain," Barnett R. Rubin and Ahmed Rashid warn that broad U.S. diplomacy is doing little to temper the growing chaos in Afghanistan and Pakistan; instead, addressing regional rivalries and insecurities should be the focus.

For many, the phrase "genetically modified" is practically blasphemous, but to billions of the world's poorest, it could mean salvation. In "The Politics of Hunger," Paul Collier argues that genetically-modified food doesn't deserve the bad rap given to it by the romantics wooed by idealized notions of organics and peasant farming. Rather, he says, GM crops, which have been banned in Europe and parts of Africa, are the best and most ethically responsible way to stop food riots and feed the citizens of developing nations who are suffering from exponentially increasing food prices.

Subscribe today to Foreign Affairs for only $24.95 57% off the cover price to read these and other articles on U.S. nuclear policy, Brazil's emergence as a global player, and more. Subscribe now with this special offer, and you'll also receive a PDF download of Samuel Huntington's seminal article, "The Clash of Civilizations?" absolutely free.

US President BUSH'S Press Conference

President George W. Bush holds a press conference Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.

US President when questioned, "Why are you going to attend the Congressional Award Ceremony for the Dalai Lama today ?", answers "So my visit today is not new to the Chinese leadership. As I told you, I brought it up with him. I wanted to make sure he understood exactly why I was going. And they didn't like it, of course, but I don't think it's going to damage -- severely damage relations. Matter of fact, I don't think it ever damages relations when the American President talks about religious tolerance and religious freedom is good for a nation. I do this every time I meet with him."

I am copy pasting below, answers of President Bush to questions specifically relevant to Dalai Lama and the Chinese concerns, courtesy WhiteHouse.Govt, for you all, who may find it important !

Love and Peace.

BEST OF FUTURE

================================

Q Why you are going to attend the Congressional Award Ceremony for the Dalai Lama today --

THE PRESIDENT:Why -- when am I, or why am I?

Q Why are you going to, when China has expressed outrage about it? And what, if any, potential damage do you see to U.S.-China relations, considering that you need their support in dealing with Iran and North Korean nuclear issues?

THE PRESIDENT: One, I admire the Dalai Lama a lot. Two, I support religious freedom; he supports religious freedom. Thirdly, I like going to the Gold Medal ceremonies. I think it's a good thing for the President to do, to recognize those who Congress has honored. And I'm looking forward to going.

I told the Chinese President, President Hu that I was going to go to the ceremony. In other words, I brought it up. And I said I'm going because I want to honor this man. I have consistently told the Chinese that religious freedom is in their nation's interest. I've also told them that I think it's in their interest to meet with the Dalai Lama, and will say so at the ceremony today in Congress. If they were to sit down with the Dalai Lama they would find him to be a man of peace and reconciliation. And I think it's in the country's interest to allow him to come to China and meet with him.

So my visit today is not new to the Chinese leadership. I do this every time I meet with him............................

Google Adds “Street View” and “Mapplets” to Google Maps

"Google Blogoscoped", enlightens........

The previous rumors are coming true: announced at today’s Where 2.0 conference, Google has added a feature called “Street View” in certain locations on Google Maps. Also, Google is adding developer-created gadgets callled “Mapplets” to Google Maps starting today.

Street View

“Street View” displays an interactive panorama photo for certain locations on Google Maps. Note to get this to work outside the US, you need to add “&gl=us” at the end of the search URL. Below are screenshots for a search for 94111 (that’s San Francisco). Camera icons and blue lines indicate the availability of Street View data.

This new view is available for some regions (Silicon Valley, Las Vegas, Miami, Denver and New York, according to Colin Colehour from the US, who says the Street View button disappears when you move the map away from North America), and is an alternative to the existing Traffic, Map, Satellite and Hybrid views. Clicking it you will see a photograph of the location as if you were standing on the streeet looking around. The O’Reilly Radar blog, who says the data for these pictures is coming from Immersive Media (except for San Francisco, which also has a better zoom level, as it turns out), comments, “This is not just a static, A9-style image. It will also let you move along the street in a smooth manner and even more amazing it will let you change your angle and continue moving that way.”

Here’s a video grab showing Street View in action – this looks & feels amazing, albeit there’s potential privacy issues due to the level of detail (you can make out individual faces, license plates and so on):

[Also see the video as WMV.]

The Google help blurb on the Street View feature, displayed at Search Engine Land, explains how the navigation works :

  • “Blue outlines show roads where street view is available.”
  • “[A person icon on a green arrow] shows where you are on the map. The green arrow points in the direction you’re looking. You can drag the icon to navigate to a different location. You can also just click on a blue outlined road to go there.”
  • “Drag the street view to look around 360°. Use the arrow buttons to navigate down the street. You can also use the arrow keys on the keyboad.”

Google in a press release adds that Street View data “will soon expand to other metropolitan areas.” The world is shrinking.

Mapplets

Also today at the Where 2.0 conference, Google announced Mapplets (as in “map applets”). A Mapplet is a special flavor of a Google Gadget, the XML/JavaScript-based widgets you can add to iGoogle – only that this time, you’ll be adding it to Google Maps. From a press release by Google:

Mapplets enables third party developers to create mini applications that can be displayed on Google Maps, much like Google Gadgets are displayed on iGoogle. These Mapplets contain a variety of information, from housing listings to crime data, and tools like distance measurement. Users can select from a wide range of Google and third party Mapplets to display on the Map, essentially creating their own “mashup of mashups” directly on the Google Maps site, while still enjoying the built-in functionality of Google Maps, such as local search and driving directions. A number of our partners, including WeatherBug, Booking.com and Platial have already created Mapplets.

You can take a first look at this feature at a special preview page. Mapplets can be found in the Mapplets directory, and a developer documentation is available as well, clarifying that “Mapplets are mini-webpages that are served inside an IFrame within the Google Maps site. You can put anything inside this mini-webpage that you can put into a normal webpage, including HTML, Javascript, and Flash. Google provides a Javascript API that gives the Mapplet access to services such as manipulating the map, fetching remote content, and storing user preferences.” Google goes on to say that when a Mapplet is enabled by the user, Google will grab a copy of the source from your server to then serve it from gmodules.com (the domain currently caching iGoogle Gadgets as well).

Ongoing comments

[Thanks Anders C.R., Colin Colehour, TomHTML, Megan Q. and Daniel Garcia!]

Ex-KGB agent accused in death of former spy

Ex-KGB agent accused in death of former spy

By Tom Hundley and Alex Rodriguez
Chicago Tribune

LONDON -- The poisoning death of Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB colonel and outspoken critic of the Kremlin, seemed to have a cast of characters from a John le Carré novel. It captured the imagination of the international media and raised unsettling questions about the alleged involvement of the Russian government.

On Tuesday, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service made a formal request for the extradition of Andrei Lugovoi, another former KGB agent who had tea in a London hotel with Litvinenko on Nov. 1. Litvinenko fell ill almost immediately after the meeting and died Nov. 23. The death was attributed to poisoning by radioactive polonium-210. The vast majority of the world's supply of polonium-210 is manufactured at a state-owned Russian laboratory near Samara.

Russia's response to the extradition request: "In accordance with Russian law, citizens of Russia cannot be turned over to foreign states," said Marina Gridneva, a spokeswoman for the Russian prosecutor general's office.

As a result, Russia's relations with Britain appeared to be heading toward a post-Cold War low. "We are not talking about a liberal democracy here," said James Nixey, a Russia analyst at Chatham House, a London research institute.

Tuesday's extradition request, in which British officials said they had sufficient evidence to charge Lugovoi with "deliberate poisoning" in the "extraordinarily grave crime," had been expected for weeks.

A deepening chill between Russia and the West was apparent last week in an icy summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and European Union leaders. The two sides traded barbs over energy policy and human rights. "Relations have been bad for quite a while. This adds to it," Nixey said of the extradition request.

Legal experts and diplomats say there is little chance Lugovoi will see the inside of a British courtroom and little Britain can do about it.

Lugovoi maintains his innocence and called the charges politically motivated. Lugovoi told the Russian news agency RIA Novosti: "I didn't kill Litvinenko. I have no relation to his death and I have all the grounds to express my distrust for the so-called evidence that the British justice system has gathered."

Although the Russian Constitution prohibits the extradition of Russian citizens, the law does allow for the prosecution of a Russian citizen within Russia if there is evidence the person committed a crime on foreign soil.

Gridneva, the spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office, said Russian investigators would be willing to look at the evidence amassed by British prosecutors against Lugovoi.

Lugovoi worked at the KGB and its successor agency, the Federal Security Service (FSB), from 1987 to 1996.

His relationship with Litvinenko dates back a decade, when Lugovoi headed security at ORT, a Russian television channel then owned by Moscow oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who has angered Moscow by openly calling for the overthrow of the Russian government by force. Litvinenko and Berezovsky became friends after Litvinenko publicly accused his FSB bosses of asking him to help assassinate Berezovsky.

After leaving the FSB in 1998, Litvinenko was jailed on charges of disclosing classified information. The charges were dropped, and Litvinenko left Russia with his wife and son, eventually gaining asylum in Britain.

Lugovoi, meanwhile, became a partner in a soft-drinks enterprise and a security company co-owned by Dmitry Kovtun, also a key figure in the investigation. Kovtun accompanied Lugovoi to the meeting with Litvinenko at the Millennium Hotel on Nov. 1.

Radioactive traces were found at a dozen sites across London after Litvinenko's death Nov. 23, including three hotels, a soccer stadium, two planes and an office building used by Berezovsky. More than 1,000 people in Britain and abroad were tested for polonium-210 contamination.

German investigators also found traces of polonium-210, the radioactive poison used against Litvinenko, in the apartment of Kovtun's former wife in Hamburg, in two cars he used there and in a government office he visited.

Although Litvinenko, 43, said in his deathbed statement that Putin was linked to his poisoning, no ties between Lugovoi, Kovtun and the Kremlin have surfaced.

Material from The Associated Press is included in this report.

As Jewish State Honour "Democratic Court", "Islamic Court" Calls Fellow Islams Kaafirs

The Israeli government voted to appoint an Arab Muslim to the cabinet for the first time in the history of the Jewish state.
"Raleb Majadleh", was inducted as the first Arab Muslim in the Israeli Cabinet. The Deputy Prime Minster Shimon Peres told AFP, "time has come for an Arab minister in our cabinet. I hail the decision."
However, some Arab lawmakers, condemned the appointment of Majadleh, who replaces former culture minister Ophir Pines-Paz who quit last October in protest at the addition of Lieberman’s party to the coalition government.
Raleb, "the 53-year-old lawmaker said that his appointment is a right step in the direction of equality. "The first step has been taken and this has given Israeli Arabs a feeling of belonging," told Israel's Army Radio.
Israeli Arabs are descendants of the 160,000 or so Palestinians who stayed in their lands after the Jewish state was declared in 1948.Arab-led parties account for 10 of the seats in the 120-member Israeli parliament.
Contextually, rather more ironically, the erstwhile "The Islamic Court of Somalia", in it's new form and naming itself, "the People's Resistance", in an Iraqi style video postings, warned the occupiers of further bloodshed and war...... urged Somalians to unite,......."
"In an Audio tape released by some of the major Somali Islamic scholars currently in Madiina Saudi Arabia, declared any one who helped the Ethiopians in their aggression against the Muslims to be kaafirs (non Muslims) and should be fought the same," as Ethiopian and the Somali presidents agreed to 'peace talks', to form a new government after meeting with the EU and the Arab league, during the African Union summit there.
Speculative rumours are being aired that, they privately threatened to withdraw their recognition of the government if the presidents did not agree to a new government involving the 'Islamic courts' and the 'Islamic loyalist parliamentarians led by the speaker of parliament Shariif Hassan' who are self exiled in Djeabuti.
"The Islamic Court", earlier for the first time in as many weeks issued a press release to Muslims affiliated websites. experts of the press release is translated in English:
"We would like to inform the Somali people that the entire heads of the Islamic courts are safe and well, today Somalia has suffered an aggression from three different places"
1. America with its intelligence, training, funding, helped the enemy to occupy our land, they also added with war from air, land and sea.
2. The enemy Ethiopian that was sent to conquer the land
3.Kenya who helped with sanctions on political, border activities and handing Ethiopian opposition prisoners to the Ethiopian enemy.
"We would like to tell the Somali people they are under foreign colonization and we in the Islamic courts and every individual is our duty to fight these modern occupation"
"We are announcing to the Somali people that we no longer recognize the puppet "government" who have brought Somalia historic enemy to our lands"
"We in the Islamic court are still fighting in the Jubba regions and the attacks that are taking place in Mogadishu"
"We will continue to fight with our wealth and soul until our land is free from enemy occupation and colonization."
When more and more people everywhere , are asserting their wishes for a peaceful 'world order', the 'religious intolerance', shown by a few people of one particular Religion, through such 'venom-injecting', seductive instigation of their people, can certainly not augur well for that.
Nation and it's Nationality are unfortunately, mostly tagged with their religious misleadings, through misinterpretations of some 'self-proclaimed fanatic-heads', and/or 'dogmatically- conservative' Religious heads.
Just 5 days ago, in Egypt, the "Grand Mufti", Sheikh Ali Gomaa , succeeding Muhammad Sayyed Tantawy, said in an official Fatwa or religious edict, that was published Saturday by leading state daily Al-Ahram, that Islamic Sharia (or Islamic law) bars women from becoming head of state.
"If by political rights, we mean the right to vote, stand as candidate or assume public office, then the Sharia has no objection to women enjoying them, but a woman cannot serve as head of state."
Adding further he said, womens' conduct of their political rights must not break "the ethical laws of Islam", and that they should not therefore "take off the head scarf, deck themselves in fine clothes, or be alone with men who are not their husbands or close relatives."
How cynical and dogmatic, that too the "Grand Mufti" can be !!
Look how the same "Grand Mufti", is contradicted, by moderate public interpreters of the same religious group who add in the same article, "The Muslim cleric’s Fatwa however shouldn’t be misinterpreted as considering Muslim women inferior to men." !!!
They go on to put the Fatwa of their "Grand Mufti(!)", under the carpet pleading(or cajoling !),
'Men and women are both subject to Divine Retribution which is equal for the capacity of each. The Holy Qur’an stresses this in multiple verses."
The spiritual equality between men and women for instance is reiterated in verse 4:124, as follows:
“As for those who lead a righteous life, MALE OR FEMALE. while believing, they enter Paradise; without the slightest injustice”
and again in 16:97
"Anyone who works righteousness, MALE OR FEMALE, while believing, we will surely grant them a happy life in this world, and we will surely pay them their full recompense for their righteous works.”
and yet again in 40:40,
"Whoever commits a sin is requited for just that, and whoever works righteousness - MALE OR FEMALE - while believing, these will enter Paradise wherein they receive provisions without any limits."

Then who should the confused 'global Islamic community', follow to ??

And when shall there be a true 'tolerant synchronisation', between "Words and Deeds",of our fellow global Islam-Brethrens ???

May God Enlighten them with 'Tolerance,Compassion and Sense for True-Judgement' !

BEST OF FUTURE.
